Equine maduromycosis: a case report

A cystic structure developed on the left thoracic area, immediately behind the elbow, of a 2-yr-old mare. It was lanced, drained and treated with antibiotics, but recurred and was surgically removed. Tissue sections showed a granulomatous dermatitis with irregular, brown, maduromycotic colonies in the centre of neutrophil pools. The disease is thought to be a subtropical condition, probably caused by a soil saprophyte.
