The complicated process of cancer metastasis and lipoxygenase metabolites are reviewed under the headings: Metastasis; Eicosanoids; 12(S)-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (HETE)-involvement in multiple steps of cancer metastasis; Effect of 12(S)-HETE on tumour cell interactions with extracellular matrix (ECM); Effect of exogenous 12(S)-HETE on tumour cell motility; Effect of exogenous 12(S)-HETE on the release of lysosomal enzymes; Effect of exogenous 12(S)-HETE on tumour cell infrastructure and cytoskeleton; 12(S)-HETE as a signalling molecule; and Hypothesis for role of 12(S)-HETE in metastasis.
