Trichuris trichiura infection, abdominal pain, and colonoscopy

S. Mahendra Raj comments on the case of right lower abdominal pain reported by M. Yoshida et al. (American Journal of Gastroenterology (1996) 91, 161-162) and discusses the attribution of cause of the abdominal pain to a single adult Trichuris trichiura seen in the caecum on colonoscopy. The inappropriateness of colonoscopy in the developing world is also discussed. In reply, M. Yoshida (et al.) state that this case clearly showed that infection with a single parasite induced abdominal symptoms. They also reaffirm that colonoscopy may be an appropriate investigation for the diagnosis of T. trichiura in non-endemic areas, when faecal examination fails to detect ova.
