Diagnosis of Trichuris trichiura (whipworm) by colonoscopic extraction

The case is described of a 35-year-old man, who had immigrated to the USA from Honduras, who had had intermittent rectal bleeding for 6 months. There were no other clinical symptoms. Colonoscopy revealed 2 worms, one in the caecum and one in the distal transverse colon, which were removed endoscopically and found to be adult male Trichuris trichiura. The patient was treated with 100 mg/day mebendazole for 3 days and had no further symptoms.
