Evaluation of dichlorvos (V3 formulation) against larval and adult trichuris suis and observations on experimental infection in growing pigs

In a controlled test, dichlorvos (Atgard) was given in feed to pigs at 35 mg. active ingredient per kg. body-weight, 6, 27 and 49 days after administration of 15, 000 Trichuris suis ova. Clearances of 90, 94 and 100%, respectively, were obtained. The prepatent period was 41 to 45 -days. No clinical signs were observed, nor were there any differences in weight-gains and food conversion rates between uninfected, infected untreated and infected treated pigs. Haemoglobin and packed cell volume estimations of uninfected and infected untreated pigs revealed no differences. No side effects were observed when dichlorvos at 175 mg. per kg. was given to pigs but 350 mg. per kg. caused some vomiting and diarrhoea. D.A.Cz.
