Having the precedent that glycine and some olygosaccharides enhance water and sodium absorption when used in an oral rehydration solution (ORS), three different ORS were designed presenting a similar salt content as that recommended by WHO. The difference of the ORS made up for this study is that they contain 80 mmol/l sodium, and Maltrin 10 and/or glycine were used instead of glucose. The ORS was perfunded into the intestine of a group of rats (10 for each solution) during 75 minutes; results showed that the ORS having an equiosmolar quantity of Maltrin and glycine, was as efficient as the WHO solution in permitting water absorption, at the same time it favored a more affective sodium absorption.
