Five mycoplasma isolates from Danish pigs exhibited the characteristic colonial morphology of M. suipneumoniae, but were unaffected by antiserum for a type strain, NCTC 10110. Tests with hyperimmune serum prepared against one of the five strains showed all five to be closely related. Three of the strains (Ms30, Ms42 and Ms45) were selected for comparison with the type strain, NCTC 10110, and two Danish isolates of M. suipneumoniae. They were indistinguishable in most growth characteristics in filterability, antibiotic sensitivity, and metabolic tests, but the three test strains grew well at 30 deg C, and tended to form stable mycelial aggregates in broth culture. Four 9-week-old healthy pigs were given one of the strains by aerosol. After 33-35 days there were no clinical symptoms or gross P.M. lesions, but the nasal mucosa and peribronchiolar and perivascular areas of the lung contained increased numbers of lymphoid and histiocyte cells, and yielded organisms similar to Ms42. Two pigs also yielded such organisms from the brain.
