Peracute pleuropneumonia in adult cattle

Since 1990, the authors report encountering 7 incidents of peracute respiratory disease with gross PM lesions indistinguishable from contagious bovine pleuropneumonia (CBPP). Some incidents involved single animals, others 4 or 5, and in one incident, 27 of 130 cows in one herd required treatment and 9 died. Most cases involved freshly-calved cows and nearly all cases occurred between November and March. Clinical signs included severe dyspnoea with pyrexia, nasal discharge and rapid weight loss. CBPP was excluded by laboratory tests. Histological examination showed changes consistent with acute bacterial infection. Pasteurella haemolytica serotype A1 was isolated from a number of cases and although serological studies suggested viruses may be involved, there was no consistent aetiological synergism. A primary pasteurellosis was considered to be the most likely cause.
