Adult cattle vaccination and revaccination with strain 19 reduced doses for the control of brucellosis: a field experience in Mexico

Vaccination was introduced in 1980 in a control scheme (started in 1976) involving 18 000 cows on 110 premises NE of Mexico City, where 1034 cows were serologically positive. The reactors were slaughtered. Heifer calves were vaccinated at 4-6 months of age with 3 x 109 Brucella abortus strain 19. Adult cows received the same dose. Between 18 and 24 months after vaccination, only 87 reactors had to be slaughtered.
