Pleuropneumonia occurring in 32 herds in the Pianura Padura at the end of 1979 affected 20-60% of pigs weighing 10-80 kg, with a mortality rate of 3 to 18%. The histopathology was similar to that of H. pleuropneumoniae infection, but the causal agent (recovered from lungs in pure culture) more closely resembled P. haemolytica, except that it was urease positive. This agent reproduced pleuropneumonia in young pigs. Among 300 pigs inoculated with H. pleuropneumoniae vaccine (serotype 2), only 1% became ill, compared with 9% of unvaccinated controls. Relationships between the two bacteria were discussed.
