Twenty-five strains of gram-negative bacterium that produced gas from carbohydrates were isolated from the intestines and organs of swine with various diseases. Cultural, morphological, and biochemical characteristics of this organism were compared with those of Pasteurella multocida, P. multocida-like bacteria that produce gas, and other Pasteurella species. Results of preliminary taxonomic evaluation placed this organism as a new bacterial species within the Pasteurella genus. The name Pasteurella aerogenes is proposed.
