In August 1990, an outbreak of pleuropneumonia affected the goat flocks of Ogaden in eastern Ethiopia; flocks in the eastern part of Shoa province were affected later. Clinical signs, lesions and epidemiological findings suggested the occurrence of contagious caprine pleuropneumonia (CCPP) . Mycoplasma species F38 was recovered from pleural fluid samples in pure culture or in association with M. ovipneumoniae. Re-examination of pleural fluid samples from the 1982 outbreaks in Godjam which had been kept deep frozen revealed Mycoplasma species F38 antigen by an immunoperoxidase test and protein electrophoresis; Mycoplasma species F38 and M. ovipneumoniae were isolated and characterised. This is the first confirmation of CCPP in Ethiopia. The authors note that although an immunoperoxidase test and PAGE technique were used to detect Mycoplasma species F38 directly in samples, their specificity is not entirely satisfactory and isolation of the causative organism is the only sure way of confirming the occurrence of CCPP.
