A Gram-negative coccus utilizing a:-picolinate and nicotinate as the sole source of carbon, nitrogen and energy has been isolated from soil; other pyridine derivath.es are not metabolised. 6-Hydroxypicolinate and 2,5-dihydroxypyridine have been isolated and characterized as transformation products of c-picolinate. These two compounds as well as maleamate are oxidised by a:-picolinate-grown cells. c-Picolinate hydroxylase, 2, 5-dihydroxypyridine oxidase and maleamic deamidase have been detected in cell-free extracts. a:-Picolinate is degraded by this organism via 6-hydroxypicolinate, 2,5-dihydroxypyridine and maleamate as intermediates.
