Guidelines for planning a communication programme for agricultural extension workers are presented with reference to one specific agricultural project, the Barani Project in Pakistan. Sponsored by the USAID, the Barani project aimed to increase wheat, maize and groundnut production in the northern parts of the Punjab and Northwest Frontier provinces, through the dissemination of results from fertilizer and seed trials. Extension was based on the Training and Visit system (T & V) modelled on that developed by Benor. Extension Field Assistants (FAs) were appointed to work directly with 200-500 farmers. Four information units were used in the programme: single page fact sheets on crops and the control of pests, a series of posters based on the sheets, a series of radio scripts summarizing each sheet and sets of slides; 10 rules for agricultural communications are included.
