Alcoholic extract of carrot seeds possesses estrogenic properties. In the 3 day uterotrophic bioassay, at doses of 60 and 120 mg/mouse, the wet uterine weights increase significantly(P‹ 0.001). However, in comparison to estradiol-1713, the seed extract is an extremely weak estrogen. In the 3-day antiestrogenic assay, the seed extract inhibits significantly (P<0.001) the uterotrophic effect of estradioI-17(3. At doses of 80 and 120 mg/mouse, the seed extract if given orally from day 4 to 6 post-coition effectively inhibits implantation. However, when the extract is fed from day 8 to 10 post-coitum pregnancy remains unaffected.
