Effects of diethylstilbestrol and 17-.beta.-estradiol are compared in pregnant and nonpregnant, renal hypertensive and normotensive sheep on the basis of progesterone production. Uterine blood flow is found to increase with intra-arterial administration of both hormones, but most notably in hypertensive and pregnant subjects. Progesterone production, measured by radioimmunoassay, shows a marked increase after initial administration and then assumes a pulsatile pattern.
