Efficacy of progesterone-PMSG treatment for estrus induction in sheep

In 3 trials, involving 40 German Mutton Merinos (GMM) in Dec. that had not conceived in the previous breeding season, 20 GMMs in anoestrus in May, whose lambs were weaned at 40 days of age, and 14 GMM females in Jan. aged 8-10 months, a Silastic progesterone implant was placed in position for 14 days, followed by injection of 500 IU PMSG on the day of implant removal. Untreated ewe lambs served as controls for the 3rd group. In the 1st group, 70% of females came into oestrus within 48 h of the 2nd day after implant removal. In the 2nd group, 60% of females came into oestrus within 72 h of implant removal. In the 3rd group, 100% of females came into oestrus within 24-72 h of implant removal; 50% of controls had not reached puberty when treatment began.
