In the healthy body, DNase may be used to degrade foreign nucleic acids. A decrease in DNase levels, which can be caused by hypoxia, can lead to a decrease in body resistance. DNase levels were studied by horizontal viscosimetry using avian erythrocyte DNA in the liver, brain, testes and blood serum of rats placed in a barochamber (6000 m) for 7 h/day for 4 wk or 6 h/day for 8 wk. No differences were noted between control and experimental levels of DNase in the brain, liver or testes. The activity of acidic DNase in the blood serum was similar to control but the activity of basic DNase decreased by 1/2 in hypoxic animals. The decrease in DNase activity in the blood serum may be due to a decrease in DNase-rich thrombocytes and an increase in erythrocytes with high levels of DNase inhibitors.
