Ultrastructure and quantitative studies on sialic acid content of cultured human foetal skeletal muscle cells and malignant HFS1 cells were carried out. Electron microscopic observations did not reveal any specific differences between the 2 cell types, whereas quantitative estimations showed that sialic acid content per million cells was more in HFS, cells than that observed in normal skeletal muscle cells. Untreated HFS0 cells showed irregular and poorly defined mitochondria and ribosomes. Lysozyme treated HFS9 cells, however, had ribosomes and well defined mitochondria cristae. Sialic acid content per million cells decreased in lysozyme treated HFS, cells when compared with untreated HFS, cells.
