Conventional and germ-free chicks inoculated in the thoracic air sac with the S6 strain of Mycoplasma gallisepticum developed severe respiratory disease characterized by sneezing and rales, decreased body weight gain, and significant mortality. The body weight gain and survival of chicks given chlortetracycline (500 mg/litre) in their drinking water for the first 5 days after inoculation were significantly greater than those of inoculated chicks which were given no treatment.
