The breeding of Phlebotomus papatasi in laboratory setting has been studied for 4 years. It has been found that in addition to the well-known factors such as temperature and humidity, sandfly development is affected by the features of reservoirs for their breeding, amount of nutrient substrate, duration of a diapause and developmental conditions of their parents. Ph. papatasi responds to deterioration of dwelling conditions with prolonged period of development, increased number of diapausing larvae and decreased number of emerged imagines, i.e. with development inhibition of different degree and movable transfer to diapause.
