The occurrence of keratinophilic fungi was examined in 21 samples of sewage sludge collected from 10 waste water treatment plants in Silesia. A total of 981 isolates representing 13 keratinophilic fungal spp. were found. The most prevalent species were Trichophyton [Keratinomyces] ajelloi, T. terrestre, Arthroderma uncinatum and Arthroderma quadrifidum, followed by Chrysosporium pruinosum and Chrysosporium keratinophilum. The use of waste water sediments in recultivation and fertilization of soils is discussed.
