Geophilic dermatophytes and other keratinophilic soil fungi in soil samples from an Alpine region

From an alpine site in the vicinity of Lindau on Lake Constance 320 soil samples were collected and baited with hair, feathers and hedgehog spines. Dermatophytes were obtained from 131 samples and keratinophilic moulds from 62. Trichophyton ajelloi (111 isolates), T. terrestre (22), Microsporum gypseum (14), Anixiopsis stercoraria (51) and Chrysosporium evolceanui (11) were isolated. M. gypseum was rare (1.7%) in urban areas and more common in inhabited countryside (9%). Keratinophilic dermatophytes were found up to 2056 m in the mountains.
