Formation of phytotoxic substances by microscopic fungi in the soil and their ecologic significance

Formation of phytotoxic substances by Penicillium canescens strain 3923, P. cyaneofulvum strain 1416, P. granulatum strain 4806, P. spinulosum strain 5606, P. decumbens strain 3877, Aspergillus fumigatus strain 1395, Fusarium lateritium strain 1811, Chaetomium indicum strain 6418, Chaetomium sp. strain 3961 and Paecilomyces variota strain 6682 was studied in soddy-medium podzolic sandy loam soil. Growth of winter wheat plants in soil inoculated with spores of toxin-forming fungi was notably slower than controls. Microscopic fungi forming phytotoxic substances during cultivation were capable of producing these substances directly in soil. Many phytotoxins, which are simultaneously antibiotics, may have a significant effect on soil microflora and specifically act on a definite group of microorganisms.
