Three cases of phycomycosis in dogs

The initial lesions in 1 dog were ulcerations of the oral mucosa of the hard palate. Antibiotic therapy was unsuccessful and protopsis of one eye and haemorrhagic diarrhoea followed. When the animal was killed a fungus tentatively identified as Hyphomyces destruens was found in facial and intestinal lesions. In the other cases palpable abdominal masses were found and celiotomies performed. Typical phycomycete granulomas were found containing large nonseptate hyphae. Microscopic or culture methods are essential in such cases to avoid incorrect diagnosis of a neoplastic condition.
