Metastatic phycomycosis in a horse

Subcutaneous mycosis of the hind limb of a 15-month-old thoroughbred filly was characterized by extensive swelling, alopecia and ulceration. Extension of the lesion and involvement of the inguinal lymph node occurred despite treatment and the animal was killed. A fungus morphologically resembling Hyphomyces destruens [Pythium sp.; see RMVM 10, 346] was isolated from the limb and nodal lesions.
