Phycomycosis in fifteen dogs and two cats

In a retrospective study of 17 cases seen at a small animal clinic between 1971-1977, phycomycosis was diagnosed from histological preparations of biopsy material or material collected at post-mortem examination. From cultures, smears and scrapings examined in 6 cases, Mucor sp. was identified in one dog, but the genus of the remaining organisms was not determined. Treatment by surgical excision, amphotericin B and sodiumiodide alone, or in combination, was attempted in 5 dogs, but all of the animals died or were killed when treatment failed.
