From a study of 4 patients in whom it was found that consumption of 1/2-2 1. milk/day for 1-3 yr failed to induce a normal intestinal mucosal lactase activity (>=1 U/g mucosa), it is suggested that, in man, it is unlikely that lactose intolerance is due to a dietary deficiency of lactose or that lactase may be induced by feeding lactose.
