The effect of iron deficiency anaemia, protein deficiency and helminth infection on intestinal disaccharidase activity in the rat was examined after it had been observed that these factors may have contributed to the premature onset of lactase deficiency in man in Singapore. Nippostrongylus brasiliensis infection consistently depressed jejuna! lactase and maltase activities but had little effect on sucrase activity. Iron deficiency anaemia and protein deficiency also affected lactase activity. D.A.Cz.
