Activity of lactase and the syndrome of milk intolerance

Lactase deficiency and milk intolerance were studied by testing with loads of lactose and of glucose + galactose, and sometimes by estimating disaccharidase activity in the mucosa of the small intestine. Of 248 persons 18 to 89 years old with no sign of digestive disorder 38 were deficient in lactase. Secondary lactase deficiency was detected in 3 of 32 patients with peptic ulcer, 5 of 28 with chronic gastritis with reduced secretory function, and 11 of 38 with chronic enterocolitis.
