Subjects studied were 100 patients, men and women, 15 to 75 years old with gastrointestinal disorders and prone to intolerance to cow's milk and also 20 normal, tolerant, subjects. A history of allergy was found in 21% of patients. Intolerance to cow's milk was accompanied by clinical signs of gastrointestinal disturbance, skin changes, tachycardia and migraine. Only 8 of 21 patients with obvious signs of milk intolerance had a high passive haemagglutination reaction. The BTL index (blastic transformation of lymphocytes) in 72-h cultures with phytohaemagglutinins in 20 normal subjects averaged 45.5 plus or minus 2.9% (range 24 to 71) and in a culture with antibodies from cow's milk BTL was found in 3. For the patients, the corresponding values were 50.0 plus or minus 1.3% (32 to 71) and 14 cases. The leucocyte migration index was 86.6 plus or minus 1.5% (range 85 to 110) for the controls and 79.3 plus or minus 5.7% (12 to 300) for the patients. In was concluded that a history of allergy and signs of cow's milk intolerance are evaluated mainly by means of immunoallergic mechanisms.
