When babies choose to breast feed on one side only, the unused breast gradually ceases milk production. This letter points out that sucking (nipple stimulation) is not only necessary for triggering the release of prolactin, but that it is also necessary for the effect of prolactin at the target site - a point which is often omitted in textbooks on the subject.
