The growth of S. enteritidis in various broth media was approximately the same. Enterotoxin production was highest in syncase medium in which the V/L (fluid volume to loop length ratio) is 1.25; in nutrient broth the value was 0.9. The organism could grow and produce enterotoxin in various types of milk and V/L ratio from 0.85 to 0.95. V/L in chicken and meat broth was 0.8-1.0. Evidently S. enteritidis, if present in milk and meat, can produce, under appropriate conditions, hazardous levels of the toxin.
