Factors other than diet which may affect human milk yield are discussed, including frequency of feeding, supplementary feeding, menstruation, pregnancy, smoking and drug ingestion, and social custom. The processes involved in mammary gland development during pregnancy, lactogenesis, maintenance of lactation and milk ejection, and effects of maternal diet on these are also discussed.
