Various species of mosquito have been experimentally infected with Wuchereria bancrofti in Madagascar, but Mansonia uniformis (Theo.), which was found to contain infective larvae in 1958 [50, p. 95], never supported the development of third-stage larvae in the laboratory. A detailed study was therefore made of the development of W. bancrofti in this mosquito. Microfilariae of W. bancrofti ingested by females of M. uniformis developed normally until they became established in the thoracic muscles, but degeneration of the internal structure then set in, and development was slow and abnormal and did not proceed beyond stage I. It is concluded that M. uniformis is not a vector of W. bancrofti in Madagascar.
