The quantitative uptake of microfilariae following a blood meal on an infected Liberian volunteer by females of 6 strains of mosquitoes did not depend on their susceptibility to W. bancrofti. No significant differences in number of microfilariae ingested were observed between 3 strains of Culex although their infection rates varied from 87.4% for C. quinquefasciatus (Delhi) to 40.2% for C. pipiens pallens (Nagasaki) and 20.2% for C. quinquefasciatus (Monrovia), nor between a highly susceptible laboratory strain of Aedes aegypti (87.8% infected) and a resistant strain from Bong Town, Liberia (4.7%). The mean number of microfilariae/female for Culex and Aedes did not differ significantly, but was distinctly higher than in Anopheles gambiae. Mosquitoes of differing susceptibility were infected with Wuchereria bancrofti microfilariae and ingested similar amounts of parasites. A concentration effect shown in previous studies was confirmed. There was no relationship between the degree of susceptibility and the number of ingested microfilariae. C. J. Leake.
