A 38-year-old man presented with painless haematuria and bilateral inguinal lymphadenopathy in March 1985. Fine needle aspiration of a pigmented subcutaneous nodule in the left chest wall showed malignant melanoma. The cytoplasm contained variable amounts of brown-black pigment ranging from fine grains to numerous coarse granules that obscured the nucleus. Two mf of W. bancrofti were identified in the same specimen. Cytoscopic examination of the bladder revealed 2 deposits of a blue-black tumour on the right posterior wall. Biopsy confirmed the presence of a metastatic malignant melanoma. Despite chemotherapy, the patient died. Mf are infrequently seen in urinary sediment smears of patients with haematuria. The coincidental association of mf with metastatic tumour cells in urinary sediment smears does not appear to have been previously reported.
