Relative efficacy of Wuchereria bancrofti microfilarial & infective larval antigens in the detection of filarial antibodies

In a bancroftian filarial endemic area, the relative effiacy of microfilarial (mf), and infective larval (L3) antigens in the detection of filarial antibodies by indirect hemagglutination (IHA) and counter immunoelectrophoresis (CIEP), was assessed. The positivity rates using IHA test with both mf and L3 antigen were comparable. About 70% of mf carriers, about 55% of clinical filiariasis (acute or chronic) and about 25% of normals (free from mf/disease) were positive. The positivity of non-endemic normals was < 5% with both the antigens. CIEP test was less reactive than IHA test.
