Synthesis and degradation of liver ribosomal RNA in fed and fasted rats

The turnover of liver ribosomal RNA in fed and starved rats was studied by observing the rate of loss of radioactivity during several days after injection of orotic acid labelled with 3H. In fed rats, the fractional catabolic and synthetic rates were 14 and 16% per day, respectively. During starvation, degradation of RNA and synthetic rate were increased, but after 48 h without food the fractional rate of degradation decreased.
