Male albino rats weighing 130 to 180 g kept in cages allowing restricted activity were fed freely on standard diet (Protector, Brussels, Belgium) with protein 15, carbohydrate 40 and lipid 4%. Each morning some rats were made to swim for 15 or 30 min with a 10-g weight tied to their tails. and were killed immediately after swimming or 15 min after a 15-min swim. Unexercised rats were killed as controls.
