Brucella-associated vertebral osteomyelitis in a thoroughbred mare

The clinical and clinicopathological manifestations of vertebral osteomyelitis and osteoarthritis attributable to Br. abortus infection in a Thoroughbred mare were studied over a period of 12 weeks. The disease was afebrile during the period, and was associated with signs of meningism. Serum agglutination titres showed fluctuations, while c.f. and anti-equine-globulin tests were consistently indicative of chronic Br. abortus infection. A progressive hypoplastic anaemia developed, and a relative mono-cytosis with periodic band neutrophilia was observed.
