In a 5-yr-old female Boxer with a history of dyspnea and lethargy, radiographs taken after thoracentesis, when 150 ml of seropurulent fluid was removed, indicated an ill-defined mass adjacent to the diaphragm. Exploratory surgery and subsequent microscopic and cultural examination of an excised portion of the mass revealed a suppurative granuloma containing sulphur granules. Actinomyces organisms were seen occasionally in the centre of the inflammatory reaction. Clinical recovery followed surgery and treatment with high doses (up to 100 000 IU/kg body weight/day) of penicillin G.
