A methodology for more effective planning processes was derived and examined. The research programme focuses on agricultural land use in a landscape of ~14 100 ha, aiming for an overall concept and the integration of nature conservation perspectives in common agricultural management procedures. The methodological elements were: description of nature conservation aims on two hierarchical levels (general guidelines, quality standards), regional landscape specificities as the overriding parameter for the selection of aims and measures; and specific methods for nature conservation assessment, scenarios, generated by variation of the existing socioeconomic, political and legal conditions, virtual prospective states of the landscape as a consequence of a specific scenario.
