A comparative reflection on the experience with land management agreements in three EC countries, Denmark, the Netherlands and the UK, demonstrates that the change over 15 years in the types of agreements made with farmers is the result of a change in the 'accepted thinking' about the role of society to conserve the natural heritage among policy makers responsible for agriculture and the environment, with a move away from purely compensation payments.
