On the movement away of the surplus agricultural labour force in China

Migration of agricultural workers away from agriculture is leading to some changes in the social structure in China. Such movement is the inevitable result of control by supply and demand. There are, however, positive effects of the migration. In some cases the departure of surplus workers may improve the relation between the size of the peasant holding and the family size leading to an improvement in the management of the holding. The loss of surplus labour also improves the productivity of the labour left on the land. It may also increase the commodity level of agriculture and so increase competition.
