The economic utility of children's labour is examined in India through analysis of data collected in household surveys of six adjoining villages in Birbhum district of West Bengal during May-August 1986. Attitudes to family size in the village communities are also discussed. A need for fertility regulation among poor couples is recognised and a suggestion made that family planning information be disseminated and birth control methods made available at affordable prices.
