Vasopressor and Depressor Activity of Phenylalkyltrimethylammonium Compounds

The following homologous series of phenylalkyltrimethylammonium compounds were synthesized and examined for their effects on the blood pressure of the dog: Phenyl-; benzyl-; 2-phenylethyl-: and 3-phenylpropyl-trimethylammonium. The first 2 members of the series were muscarinic-like (vasodepressor) and the latter two were nicotinic (vasopressor). Changes in charge distribution on the aromatic ring as one ascends the series has been proposed as a possible explanation for the difference in effects of these compounds on blood pressure.
