When properly applied, ultrasonic energy may be used to obtain echoes from tissue interfaces. These echoes can be made to generate a cross-section "picture" of the specimen. Ultrasonic pictures produced by this method are shown, along with pictures of the object studied. With technical improvements in the equipment and further information obtained from clinical studies, there should evolve an instrument of considerable value as an adjunct to X-ray in diagnosis.
