The effect of prostaglandin E1 on CSFP and its interaction with vasopressor in humans

The effect of prostaglandin E1 on CSF pressure (CSFP) was evaluated in both awake and lightly anesthetized humans, and the interaction of prostaglandin E1 and phenylephrine on CSFP was also evaluated in lightly anesthetized humans. Prostaglandin E1 (0.2 .mu.g/kg per min) did not cause a significant increase in CSFP in awake humans, but did slightly in lightly anesthetized humans. When phenylephrine was given during the administration of prostaglandin E1, CSFP decreased slightly but significantly (P < 0.05). Prostaglandin E1 can be used safely for both awake and anesthetized patients without intracranial pathology, and raising of blood pressure by phenylephrine during administration of prostaglandin E1 may not be harmful as far as CSFP is concerned.
