Lactation inhibition was compared in 2 groups of mothers given (i) 15 mg stilboestrol daily for 7 days (standard practice) or (ii) 4 mg quinestrol within 6 h of delivery followed by a daily placebo for a further 6 days; all drugs were administered as identical green capsules. During the patients' 7-day stay in hospital, both treatments were found equally successful in controlling lactation and breast engorgement.
